Bo, Kumibo and Jo
History of the Bo
Kon is an old word meaning stick. From many historical readings bo has come
to mean a polished stick. Bo range from 6-9 feet long. They could be 4, 6
or 8 sided depending on use/style, rounded or tapered. The Okinawans favored
tapering both ends, the Japanese preferred a straight round bo and some Chinese
systems favored only one end tapered.
The bo should be 6-9" longer that the users' height, or 1 hand width
(approximately 4 ") taller for AAU competitions. The diameter of the
grip should allow ones' fingertips to just touch the palm. The wood of choice
by our testers is Ipe (3680 PSI).
