Eku

The eku was used for steering coastal craft. Some were up to 7' or more in length and the diameter of the handle up to 2". Other eku were shorter for use in maneuvering between reefs and shoals. Typically the oar had one side beveled and the bottom was flat or semi-rounded. Today, most commercially provided eku are 5'6" in length.
Our standard is 6'. The blade tapers from 4'' at the handle to 3 3/4' at the tip with the bottom flat. Our handle is oblong, 1" thick by 1 1/4' wide with the weapons' center of balance in the middle of 1 hand span from the bottom of the blade. Round handles at 1 1/8" can be ordered, round bottoms and round tips or flat tip can be ordered.... any handle length or style can be custom made.
